I am Arcadia’s Stepping Stone After School Coordinator for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant in Deer Park. This is our second year of a five year federal grant. I have two para educators and three Whitworth students who are majoring in Education to mentor the students. There are two components to my program. On Mondays and Fridays, “Stepping Stone” is open to ANY 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade Arcadia student from 3:05-5:30 pm. The students have several choices of clubs and activities to attend such as board games, outdoor sports, cooking, arts and crafts, computer lab, movies, community service, Karaoke, Legos, Knex, etc. There is also a Homework Center offered on Mondays if the student chooses. Snacks are provided to all attendees. Transportation is also provided, but limited to certain stops. See the attached bus route maps.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays are focused on math activities. Students may attend if they are referred by their teacher or parent. We have the students grouped according to grade level, and each student is apart of a TEAM. There will be pre-teaching math concepts, math games, homework time, and team building activities. Enrollment is limited and priority given to those students needing additional math assistance.

Each month, I go into all the classrooms to give them a Stepping Stone Calendar and information concerning family activities. My office is in the library or you can reach me on my cell phone at 217-2179 or 710-4229. The enclosed enrollment form is the only requirement to join the Stepping Stone Program, but enrollment is limited. A ”waiting list” will be implemented if needed. I can always use volunteers who would like to help with an activity or hobby. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or would like to help. My email is “rapeljl@dpsd.org”.

TRANSPORTATION: Parents may pick up their student or a district school bus will take students to designated drop-off locations. This bus service is also funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant. There is a “Town” Bus and a “Country Bus”. See the attached bus information and call Sonja, Transportation Supervisor, at 464-5530 to confirm if your child will be riding and to confirm that you know where your child’s stop will be.

CALENDAR: Monthly calendars are given to each Stepping Stone student. Note that there are two Fridays a month that we will NOT have program. This time is needed for staff planning and trainings. The dates when there is no Stepping Stone on Fridays are: Oct. 9, 23, Nov. 6, 20, Dec. 4, 18, Jan. 1, 15, Feb. 5, 19, Mar. 5, 19, April 1, 16, May 7, 21.

OUR MAIN GOALS:

1. Work in a positive way to help students engage in school, have a voice about activities after school, promote self-improvement, and improve academic achievement.

2. Create an Advisory Board with students, adults, and staff within Arcadia and Deer Park Middle School to make decisions and help guide the program.

3. Develop relationships between parents-teachers-students-community and staff members in the Stepping Stone After School Program.

4. Establish Family Nights, resources and other activities that will increase parent-student involvement in school to make them feel connected to the school and their Deer Park community.

Thanks so much! Lyla Rapelje, Stepping Stone Coordinator
